The Internet has fallen in love with Monty, a very special cat with a huge heart and adorable personality. The cat has Down syndrome, but that doesn’t stop this beautiful feline from enjoying life to the fullest. The cat was living in an animal shelter when Michael Bjorn and his partner, Mikala Klein, found him and decided to adopt him. The two men immediately felt a connection with the cat and knew that Monty was the perfect cat for them. No one before them had shown any interest in adopting the cat, simply because he looked different. Fortunately, Monty now has a happy home and is receiving lots of love and attention.
Michael Bjorn and his partner, Mikala Klein, from Rødovre, near Copenhagen, Denmark, were looking to adopt a new cat.
So they visited a local shelter to see what they could find. There they discovered a little cat – different from all the others they had seen before.
Little did they know that this feline would capture their hearts forever.
His name is Monty.
He had been at the shelter for a long time, but no one wanted to adopt him. The reason? He looks a little… different.
But this couple immediately fell in love with this unique-looking cat.
“We met him briefly and quickly fell in love with him. We felt he chose us,” Michael Bjorn told a local newspaper.
However, once adopted and settled, the couple noticed that his behavior was also unique. First of all, he was peeing in his sleep.
They consulted a veterinarian who told them this behavior is common in older cats, who may be regularly unable to control their peeing at random times.
But Monty was not very old and only peed occasionally in his sleep.
They wondered if this was Monty’s way of marking his territory in the family since they had other cats at home. They decided to ask friends who didn’t have other pets to watch him for a while to see how it went, but it soon turned out not to be so good.
“When we went to drop him off, Mikala (Michael’s partner) was so sad she couldn’t let him go. It was embarrassing, but we had to take him home,” Michael said.
Eventually, however, they found out what made Monty so special: a chromosomal abnormality was causing the peeing problem, among other things.
“There’s not a lot of research on chromosomal abnormalities in animals, but you can compare it somewhat to Down syndrome in humans,” Michael explains.
But this little anomaly doesn’t affect Monty’s behavior. According to Michael, he is just as playful as the other cats.
“Monty is particularly silly, playful, and always happy, like a kitten, even though he’s five years old. He is incredibly sweet and very attached to me. He insists on sleeping between my legs every night,” Michael said.
Monty is not only popular with his own family, but he also has a following, with his own Facebook page and more than 135,000 people following it. There is even a collection of “Monty logo” clothing and toys that fans can purchase!
Proceeds from sales go to the shelter where Monty lived – Cat Værn.
